This is what I read everyday... - maryhalloran - 秋春粉墨

Chinese Financial Magazines

Studying this stuff is pretty intense, and when you had competition into the mix it's just nasty.  I feel like I'm always falling behind, and there's always some financial or political word that I don't know.  It's quite stressful.

Either way, though, I've decided to accept my destiny and do my best with this program.  It's not everyday that you can earn a free master's degree, and if all works out well in the end I'll be one of those simultaneous interpreters that makes 2~4K a day interpreting for some world leader.  Let's keep the fingers crossed.

My Chinese classes have about 20 students, with only three of us being foreigners (me included).  The other two are also girls, one from England (J) and another from Romania (L).

In Japan I was loved and adored just for the mere fact of being American, but here in Shanghai we are the minority.  Since coming to this school I haven't met one single American; for every British person I meet I seem to encounter someone from Russia.  Shanghai is simply being overrun by Brits and Russians, followed up by Japanese and Koreans.

In class there is basically only two English native speakers, and instead of flocking to 'badass America,' it seems that the British accent is now 'in.'  When we had to pick practice partners for interpreting, all 20 of the Chinese people flocked to J and basically screamed, "I WANT YOU . I WANT YOU, ENGLAND!"

All of my teachers, strangely, also have a British accent.  More than half of the class also speaks like the queen.  It's the first time I've been so surrounded by, well, England.  I think not only has my Chinese pronunciation improved since coming to this school, but I got the British accent pretty down pat.  I can even distinguish north, south, Wales--oh, the variety!

J is pretty much my closest friend here, both in and out of the classroom.  She's my bar buddy and she always can slam a shot with me with little gag reflex.  We're always together doing anything but studying, and it's been fun to indulge in the British/American differences.

"Oh Mary, I think Takeshi Kaneshiro is SO fit!"

"I'm so keen about our classes!"

"That guy is such a muppet!"

"I've got a stich!  My stomach hurts so bad!"

The list goes on.  If you don't understand it, don't worry, I don't either.  America and England still have a long way to go until we can truly become interchangeably understood.

It's off to classes.  I would post more pictures, but my smart phone was lost in a taxi and I use a ghetto phone that is probably worse than the black and white piece of crap I used in jr high.  Well, the new phone is on the way and hopefully we can fix that problem ;)

Happy Autumn, everybody.

秋高气爽!!!
